Major towns in the region include Ocala, Belleview, Dunnellon, McIntosh and Reddick. Unincorporated communities are Silver Springs, Fort McCoy, Marion Oaks, Silver Springs Shores and Salt Springs. The affordability and variety of housing is one of the reasons that so many are choosing to relocate to the area. Silver Springs is surrounded by scenic countryside and offers everything from newly built country communities, suburbs of new single-family homes, condos, townhouses and apartments to horse farms with picturesque weathered homes and large estates. The nearby city of Ocala offers small town appeal combined with the amenities of a much larger city. Ocala's historic district has tree-lined streets and lovely Victorian and Tudor style homes. A growing trend in Marion County are beautifully designed gated communities that feature luxurious, yet affordable custom built homes. Such communities include Oak Run, On Top of the World, Ocala Palms, Lake Diamond, Spruce Creek, Lady Lake, The Villages of Marion, and others that offer a variety of recreation, many with clubhouses, golf courses, pools, tennis courts, fitness centers, scenic walking trails, restaurants and a host of other indoor activities and opportunities for social interaction. Homes are priced from $120,000 for a starter home to $450,000 for a rural estate or horse farm. The average price of a three-bedroom, two-bath home is between $200,000 to $250,000.

Silver Springs/Marion County has access to excellent schools and health care providers, churches, shopping centers, cultural and recreational activities. In the past five years, Marion County has expanded by 17.8 percent – which is more than the state and national averages. Thousands of new residents are attracted to the area each year by the healthy economy, beautiful scenery, diverse recreational activities, affordability and excellent quality of life. Marion County is home to more than 300,000 residents and nearly 121,000 households and is projected to grow by an additional 10 percent to 355,000 residents by 2010.

Silver Springs is often called the crossroads of Florida, located in the north-central portion of the state within an hour or two of major metropolitan areas. It is at the hub of a system of federal and state highways that crisscross the country. Residents have easy access to Interstate 75 for north/south travel, to U.S. highways 27, 301, and 441, and state roads 40 and 200, which connect with points east to the Atlantic and west to the Gulf of Mexico. In addition, Greyhound bus line provides daily passenger and package express service and the Ocala Regional Airport is a general aviation facility that offers private and charter flight services, as well as a business aircraft terminal. The Gainesville Regional Airport, which is a 35-mile drive from Ocala, serves the region with connections nationwide and international flights are less than two hours away in Orlando, Tampa, and Jacksonville.
